Warehouse TERRADA Hosting On-Site Creation and Exhibition Project in Collaboration with Four Kyoto Art Universities

(Tokyo, Japan) Warehouse TERRADA, in collaboration with four art universities in Kyoto (Kyoto City University of Arts, Kyoto University of the Arts, Kyoto Seika University, and Kyoto Saga University of Arts / Kyoto Saga Art College), is hosting “Unis in Unison 2025: Kyoto Rising Artists Project” – an on-site creation and exhibition project for emerging artists from these institutions. This project is implemented in collaboration with “Lightseeing Kyoto South,” an art project organized by Kyoto City.

The project venue, TERRADA ART STUDIO Kyoto, is a rental atelier located within walking distance of Kyoto Station. It provides an environment where artists can focus on their creation, with art storage and a communal space also located on the same floor.

For this project, 19 emerging artists from the four universities participate in approximately three-month on-site creation periods, divided into two terms. They create works and subsequently exhibit them publicly within their studio spaces. Warehouse TERRADA is providing TERRADA ART STUDIO Kyoto free of charge as a venue for creation and exhibition.

Securing studio space and creating exhibition opportunities are crucial challenges for young artists as they continue their activities. This project aims to enable artists in their early careers to continuously engage in creation and gain connections with visitors and art professionals, paving the way for their next steps. Additionally, during the exhibition period, the facility’s studio artists will also participate by opening their private ateliers, which are normally not open to the public.

– Project key

1) Providing a free environment for integrated creation and exhibition

Warehouse TERRADA is providing a private atelier to each participating artist, where they undertake approximately three months of on-site creation. Following this, their ateliers will be opened to host an exhibition for visitors.

2) An on-site creation and exhibition project of artists from universities that goes beyond university boundaries

This collaboration enables artists from four art universities in Kyoto to engage in on-site creation and showcase their works. The interactions between artists with diverse backgrounds foster new perspectives and broader artistic expressions.

3) Exhibition style showcasing the creative process

Artists will present their creations in the ateliers where they have pursued their creative work for approximately three months. Visitors can not only appreciate the finished pieces but also experience the trajectory of the artists’ continuous creative exploration within that very space.

4) Fostering connections between art and society

TERRADA ART STUDIO Kyoto is co-located with an art storage facility. This adjacent storage service is regularly visited by collectors and gallerists who utilize its services. Equipped with a communal space where studio artists and art professionals can gather, the studio functions as a hub for both creation and communication. Through this project, we aim to provide young artists with a vital platform for connecting with society.

[Creation Support and Area Collaboration in Kyoto]

Warehouse TERRADA, established in 1950 and based in Tennoz, Tokyo, has been involved in the art storage business since the 1970s and has also engaged in community development through art in collaboration with local communities since the 1980s. In recent years, we have expanded our initiatives to include the operation of ateliers, a museum, and gallery complexes utilizing warehouse spaces, as well as hosting collaborative events in conjunction with international art fairs. Furthermore, we are committed to supporting artists’ careers by organizing awards for emerging artists and operating a gallery cafe that showcases and sells works by up-and-coming artists.

Currently, we have established Kyoto as a new base, and are working to create an environment where artists can continuously engage in production and presentation. Kyoto, home to numerous art universities and a flourishing artist community, is a region where tradition and creativity thrive. The culture and aesthetic sensibilities nurtured over its long history provide a fertile ground for artistic creation.

Going forward, we will continue to collaborate with universities, research institutions, and local communities, striving to play a part in supporting creative activities. This commitment aims to both support artists who will shape the future of culture and contribute to the revitalization of Japan’s art market.

[About Warehouse TERRADA]

Established in 1950 and located in Tennoz, Tokyo, Warehouse TERRADA has developed dedicated storage services for highly specialized items such as artworks, wine, media, and confidential documents. In particular, the art storage service, first launched in 1975, has expanded into artwork restoration, transportation, exhibitions, and other related solutions, all available in one-stop. In 2014, we began operating a bonded warehouse for artworks. In 2022, we launched a new space that functions as a permanent gallery venue allowing for viewings, storage, and more under bonded conditions, aiming to further invigorate art distribution. We also operate art studios available for rent and host the TERRADA ART AWARD, supporting emerging artists. These initiatives earned us the Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award in 2018. In recent years, Warehouse TERRADA has opened several facilities that promote art and culture, including the museum of contemporary art and architecture WHAT MUSEUM, art gallery cafe WHAT CAFE, art materials lab PIGMENT TOKYO and TERRADA ART COMPLEX, one of Japan’s largest gallery complexes. Through these broad-ranging art industry operations, and as a leading company in the Japanese art world, we provide services that contribute to revitalizing the art market and developing Tennoz into the world’s most exciting art capital.
