Signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

Joint Study of Remotely Operated Isolating and Shielding Devices for Possible Application during the Decommissioning of the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. (President: Tomoaki Kobayakawa; hereinafter referred to as, “TEPCO”) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MELTIN MMI Co., Ltd. (CEO: Masahiro Kasuya; hereinafter referred to as “MELTIN”) and Yoshida Inc. (CEO: Yoko Yoshida; hereinafter referred to as “Yoshida”) for the purpose of engaging in the joint study of remotely operated isolating and shielding devices currently under development by MELTIN and Yoshida in anticipation of the practical application of this technology for the decommissioning of the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

MELTIN and Yoshida have been jointly developing analysis equipment that can be used to analyze radioactive materials at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station by combining MELTIN’s remotely operated robot technology with Yoshida’s technology for isolating and shielding radioactive material analysis gloveboxes.

Since TEPCO recognizes the potential of this technology to meet certain needs in the field, the three companies have signed a MoU in accordance with which TEPCO shall provide information on practical analysis vital for further technological development and cooperate with confirming that the equipment meets various needs in the field pertaining to, for example, operability and radiation resistance.

Through this joint initiative, we aim to contribute to decommissioning and contaminated water countermeasures at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station by developing safer and more efficient radioactive material analysis equipment.

–    MELTIN MMI Co., Ltd.
Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Tokyo, MELTIN, is a start-up company with a development base in Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture that develops cyborg technologies using bio-signals and robotics. In 2018, MELTIN revealed its concept for an avatar robot named, ‘MELTANT-α’ and followed that up in 2020 with an enhanced model for field-testing named, “MELTANT-β”. MELTIN was selected by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) for its start-up support program, “J-Startup”.

–   Yoshida Inc.
Founded in 1923 in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Since 1961, Yoshida has been manufacturing gloveboxes for the nuclear power industry, and has had its core technology for isolation and shielding used in the decommissioning and medical fields. Yoshida manages the designing, manufacturing and installation of gloveboxes, shielded gloveboxes and steel cells. Yoshida was recognized as a “Company Driving Regional Growth” by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in 2018, and selected as a “Vibrant HABATAKU Small and Medium Enterprises 300” by the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency (SMEA) in 2019.
